But over 40% of movies still fail this basic test of female agency.

Should be a simple test, right? After all, a two-hour movie has dozens and dozens of conversations in it. You may have heard of the Bechdel test - it’s a rough estimate of whether a movie actually gives agency to its female characters by allowing them to have conversations about a topic other than men. It took the Marvel Cinematic Universe 21 tries before finally having a female superhero center-stage. Think about Scarlette Johannsen’s Black Widow character - always the supporting cast, never a lead. Women are also less likely to lead a movie, more likely to make up the supporting cast of characters. Female movie characters are often regulated as subservient to the narrative of the main male lead: the “wife” character, the “girlfriend”, “the mother”, the “damsel in distress”, the “seductress”. This is due in part to the boys’ clubs of directors and screenwriters in Hollywood. When they are presented onscreen, women are three times as likely to be sexualized than men. Women make up only 33% of speaking roles in top Hollywood films, a shockingly low amount considering that women are half of the population. Stacy Smith discusses the various roles sexism plays in Hollywood. Of course, gender inequality persists on-screen as well. Only the steadfast sexism within Hollywood silences these voices. When Hollywood’s budgets are taken out of consideration, and art is appreciated as art, director representation tends towards equality. Anecdotally, my cinema classes at the University of Chicago were majority women - I was consistently led by female professors, classmates, and project leaders. Take the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where this year, 45% of the directors or creators were women. In smaller film festivals, without the big budgets of Hollywood, movies contain more diverse storytellers. Of course, this discrepancy is not for inequity of talent, but of opportunity. Not only has only one woman won the Academy Award for Best Director (Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2009) but in 2015, only 4.1% of Hollywood directors and only 8% of screenwriters are women. There really just aren’t many influential female directors out there. Ava Duvernay, activist and director of 13th? Greta Gerwig? Sophia Coppola, perhaps? Even if you can think of a female director, it’s likely that the names don’t pop into your mind as easily. Now, you do have the right to an attorney, and if there's something you have to contact the outside world for (such as, somebody to deliver medicine to your poor sick mother) he'd be the one to talk to if the cops aren't letting you use the phone. Y'know, if the regular beatings weren't enough. Phone calls in prisons, jails or other detainment facilities are a privilege, which can be taken away whenever the cops feel like you weren't behaving yourself (that's why the privileges exist, so they have something to take away if you're being a dick and something to promise you to keep you in line). Now that goes both ways some jails have pay phones and you can call whoever you want as long as the person on the other end is willing to pay for it, but they don't have to let you use the phone at all.
